Early last summer, I started my own YouTube mini-news show.
I called it “Snark of the Week“. Below is the first ever episode of that show.
Wow. A lot of time has gone by between then and now.
One of the most concerning stories I covered during that premiere on May 19, 2012 was how congressmen were in the process of considering an amendment that would strike the ban on domestic propaganda:
“‘The new law would give sweeping powers to the government to push television, radio, newspaper, and social media onto the U.S. public. “It removes the protection for Americans,’ says a Pentagon official who is concerned about the law. ‘It removes oversight from the people who want to put out this information. There are no checks and balances. No one knows if the information is accurate, partially accurate, or entirely false.’”
(The story was written for Buzzfeed by the recently deceased Michael Hastings — a young reporter who was critical of the establishment and whose reporting helped bring down the four-star general U.S. military chief in Afghanistan. Hastings died at age 33 under what many people consider suspicious circumstances.)
That was then. On December 29th, 2012, President Obama signed the 2013 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) which, for the first time since 1948, made propaganda legal within the United States and on the American people.
While we all know propaganda is being used anyway, for them to brazenly repeal protections against it means nothing short of open season on Americans’ minds.
Pro tip: there’s a reason the Brookings Institute coined the phrase “CNN Effect” or what NASA refers to as “CNN Syndrome,” where real-life events are manipulated for sensational powers.
Happy brainwashing, America.
Original broadcast description:
The gamut: NATO protesters are domestic terrorists who can be disappeared for any reason, US propaganda machine may be legalized (welcome to 1984!), ridiculous new dem laws and race-baiting training (if you don’t support Obama, you sir/ma’am are a RACIST! Just so you know…), vaccine irony and Obama admin. debating whether or not to test anthrax vaccine on our kids, the only guy in the WH with any CISPA sense left (no, really he quit), robot overlords might take over the world, oops on some bomb dropping, a sheriff who didn’t know his department owned drones, CPS protecting the services more than the child, TSA failing for the quadrillionth time, a quadrillion in derivatives and I’m sure there is something else but I can’t remember now.
Ah…the news…good times. It’s like a train wreck: you don’t want to see the horror but you can’t look away. It’s worse than a bad soap opera written in a language you don’t know but there aren’t any other channels on your TV so you watch out of sheer boredom…something like that.
P.S. — Another update: Since this video was made, a presidential ethics panel also declared it’s okay to test anthrax vaccines on babies back in March.
