The Golden State* is about to remove the thin veil of medical legitimacy from its abortion clinics.
A new bill just cleared the California State Assembly, making the state one step closer to allowing non-doctors to perform abortions:
Assembly Bill 154, by Democratic Assemblywoman Toni Atkins of San Diego, would authorize nurse practitioners, certified nurse midwives and physician assistants who undergo training to conduct aspiration abortions, a procedure that uses a suction method to remove a fetus early in a pregnancy.
If this bill passes, it would mean that a woman could terminate her pregnancy without ever even laying eyes on a real doctor. How many other potentially life-threatening surgical procedures have you heard of where that’s possible (or advisable, or a common sense thing to do, or…)?
In the comments section under the above-quoted article, people are actually arguing that this is ‘no big deal,’ basically a non-issue and few understand why “a medically trained person” should not be allowed to perform abortions.
Medical complications can arise from even the simplest of procedures, and while entirely elective in most cases, an abortion is anything but a simple, non-invasive medical procedure. [pullquote]How cheap will life become when the procedure to end a life just as it begins has not only been rationalized as acceptable but placed in the hands of a minimally trained practitioner?[/pullquote]
With the argument that non-doctors can play doctor, why would a doctor be necessary…at all, ever? Why not just have “medically trained people” perform all the medical procedures and do away with the need for bonafide doctors completely? Does that make any sense?
Maybe in some cases, but not as a trend, especially when lives are at stake.
Planned Parenthood is already suing in states like Wisconsin for the right to perform webcam abortions. Yeah, I typed that correctly, webcam abortions. What’s next? Drive-thru abortions? Are they going to install a kiosk for 24-hour abortions next to the customer service counter at your local big box store?
Where does this dehumanization and the desensitization to elective death end?
Accounts of women being irreparably harmed and even dying from botched abortions — performed by actual doctors — come out in the news all the time. In the horrific trial going on right now of abortion doctor Kermit Gosnell, the liberal mainstream media has been starkly silent in what appears to be a protective measure to conceal the dark side of their pro-choice agenda.
But that Gosnell guy was a doctor, too.
How cheap will life become when the procedure to end a life just as it begins has not only been rationalized as acceptable but placed in the hands of a minimally trained practitioner? While perhaps these people will be aptly trained to carry out the physical task itself, it opens the door for a careless attitude that does not appropriately consider the risks to the individual and the costs to society.
Call me pessimistic, but here’s where that road ends:
Spoiler Alert: Soylent Green is people.
